Wimbledon 2009

Will 2009 be Andy Murray's year for The Campionships at Wimbledon? Swedish tennis legend Bjorn Borg, 52, has predicted a victory for Murray in 2009: "Andy is a future world No 1. He has been a bit unlucky with injuries but when he is fit, he can win any tournament. I like the way he plays. I don't think he will win it but he could be a champion next year."

Expectations are high for Rafael Nadal, the player the press has crowned King Nadal. Murray missed Wimbledon last year with a wrist injury. Murray also and pulled out of the Artois Championships with a thumb problem which improved just in time for Wimbledon. Borg, speaking at the HSBC's Champions of Wimbledon campaign, added: "I'd go for Nadal to win [Wimbledon in 2009]. He is moving better and more aggressive."

Will Nadal be de-throned in 2009? After a year of hard training and bulking up to statuesque David proportions could Andy Murray possibly give the Goliath-like Nadal a run for his money and dig Nadal a grave at Wimbledon? And then there is Federer, a five times Wimbledon champion and powerhouse to be reckoned with. Tennis fans will have to wait an entire year for more epic Wimbledon championships. Wimbledon 2009 would be a crime to miss.

The 2009 Wimbledon schedule brings major changes in the order of location and weighting of tournaments. The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) has chopped them up into three tiers with nine tournaments awarding higher points. The new system has been created for player-ranking purposes, and a higher profile. Players must appear in eight of the nine, a dictate that has the player in an uproar.

The ATP hired de Etienne de Villiers away from the Walt Disney Co. two and a half years ago because it needed an outside pro to make changes to a tour that had double-faulted in its media and marketing approach. Now the players allegedly want to fire the South African for the changes he has proposed.

Shying away from ATP politics, on the bright side, Centre Court at Wimbledon 2009 will be kitted out with a brand spanking new retractable roof to allow for all-weather play during The Championships. The modern roof will compliment the original 1920s stadium. The Wimbledon roof will be translucent to allow for the natural light to shine on the grass and allow play through all extreme weather conditions like the ones that saw Nadal and Federer running for cover.

During the Nadal Federer championship match Federer has said that he was on the brink of calling for the match to be stopped and restarted the next day because the light was becoming so bad. Federer explained: "It would have been brutal for the fans and us to come back but it was rough on me to lose the biggest tournament in the world because of the light."

The Wimbledon Centre Court's capacity will be increased from 13,800 spectators to 15,000 by the addition of six rows of seating to the upper tier on the east, north and west sides. There will also be a higher level of spectator comfort for Wimbledon 2009, including ease of access to the court. This will be assured through the installation of new, wider seats, as well as extra stairs and lifts.
